To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what representations he has recently received from British industry about the recession.

Mr. Lilley

I continue to receive representations from British industry supporting the Government's determination to defeat inflation, thereby creating the conditions for a resumption of sustainable economic growth.

28. Mr. Harry Barnes

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry when he next plans to meet representatives of the CBI to discuss the recession in industry in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Lilley

I expect to meet Sir Brian Corby, president of the CBI, on 15 May 1991.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry when he next plans to meet representatives of the Retail Consortium to discuss the effect of the recession in industry.

Mr. Lilley

I am next due to meet the Retail Consortium in July when I expect a wide range of matters to be discussed. Ministerial colleagues in the Department have also met the consortium in recent weeks.
