HC Deb 01 May 1991 vol 190 c200W
Mr. Nellist

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland by what means he proposes to change the ownership of the electricity industry in Northern Ireland; what representations he has received opposing such proposals; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Needham

Draft legislation to effect the privatisation has been issued for consultation. The White Paper issued previously proposes that the industry's transfer to the private sector will take place in two stages; the sale of the four power stations by competitive tender followed by a flotation of the remainder of Northern Ireland Electricity's business.

I have received representations opposing privatisation from three local authorities, the trade unions and a member of the public.

I believe that the Government's proposals for privatisation will lead to a more efficient electricity industry.
