HL Deb 28 March 1991 vol 527 c71WA
Lord Kilmarnock

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many county and controlled schools have opted to include sex education in their curriculum under the provisions of the Education (No. 2) Act 1986; and what proportion of all relevant schools they represent.

Baroness Blatch

Under the provisions of the Education (No. 2) Act 1986 governing bodies of county and controlled schools and maintained special schools are responsible for considering whether sex education should form part of their schools' secular curriculum. The Secretary of State for Education and Science does not have a record of the number of governing bodies which have decided that sex education should be so included. All schools are however required to teach those elements of sex education which form part of national curriculum science.
