HC Deb 28 March 1991 vol 188 cc511-2W
Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is his estimate of the number of elderly people who have given up driving as a result of his Department's campaign; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chope

The Government recognise the value to older people of maintaining their independence and mobility and have not been running a campaign to encourage them to give up driving. It is, however, important that any driver should notify DVLA if he develops a medical condition which might affect his ability to drive safely. In the year to April 1990 some 32,000 people over the age of 70 gave up driving on medical grounds out of a total of 1.7 million licence holders in this age group.
