These figures may not be strictly comparable given the OECD's widely drawn definition of "development awareness", which could be open to different interpretation by donor countries.

Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much the Overseas Development Administration has spent on development education in each year since 1979.

Mrs. Chalker

Raising awareness in this country of north-south interdependence and development issues is one of the principal objectives of the ODA's public information programme. It features in all ODA publications with a particular focus on schools.

This financial year, for instance, we have provided a grant of £100,000 to the International Broadcasting Trust towards "The Global Environment", a television series which will be broadcast by BBC Schools Television for the next five years.

In addition, specific development education grants are made to a wide range of organisations. Total annual expenditure is:

Financial year £
1978–79 219,000
1979–80 560,000
1980–81 413,000
1981–82 223,000
1982–83 171,000
1983–84 106,000
1984–85 106,000
1985–86 131,000
1986–87 106,000
1987–88 146,000
1988–89 223,000
1989–90 138,000
1990–91 312,000

In addition, the ODA provides an annual grant, currently £100,000, to the Overseas Development Institute for certain information and public awareness activities.
