Mr. Sims

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what steps his Department is taking to monitor and evaluate the continuing care of patients discharged from psychiatric hospital into the community in accordance with paragraph 1.29 of "Community Care into the Next Decade and Beyond".

Mr. Dorrell

Local authorities, health authorities and family health services authorities will be expected to assess the community care needs of their residents and to show, in their community care plans, how they intend meeting them. We will be monitoring the implementation of their plans, through the Department's social services inspectorate and the NHS regional review process.
