HL Deb 27 March 1991 vol 527 c61WA
Lord Mason of Barnsley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list the amendments that have been made in agreement with the Brewers Society to the recommendations of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission on beer supply; and those recommendations of the commission which have so far been carried out.

Lord Hesketh

The Government consulted a wide range of parties, including the Brewers Society, before deciding on the action to be taken on the Monopolies and Mergers Commission's report on The Supply of Beer. Three measures have since been introduced: two beer supply orders under the Fair Trading Act 1973 and the Landlord and Tenant (Licensed Premises) Act 1990. The orders increase the number of free houses and give tenants of national brewers greater freedom to purchase supplies from wherever they choose. The Landlord and Tenant Act was enacted in response to tenants' concerns over security of tenure.
