HC Deb 25 March 1991 vol 188 c318W
Sir John Stanley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what were the factors that caused him to extend the distance limit for safeguarding purposes beyond 67m from the centre line of the motorway in the case of the two-mile section of the M6 between junction 4 of the M6 and its junction with the M1;

(2) what were the factors that caused him to extend the distance limit for safeguarding purposes beyond 67m from the centre line of the motorway in the case of the 80-mile section of the M1 between junctions 6A and 33.

Mr. Chope

[holding answer 18 March 1991]: In the particular local circumstances where the existing external boundary of the motorway land is more than 67m from the centre line due to the hilly terrain with the inevitable wide embankments and cuttings, and in view of the uncertainty as to how the widening would be carried out, the Department concluded that it needed to be aware of development proposals affecting land within 30m of that boundary.
