HC Deb 25 March 1991 vol 188 cc300-1W
Mr. Robert G. Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many properties, owned and administered by his Department, have stood vacant(a) for over six months or (b) for over one year; and what is the regional distribution of these properties.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Records are not maintained in the precise form requested. As at 31 December 1990, the latest date for which figures are available, 8,227 service married quarters in the United Kingdom had been vacant for under one year and 2,365 for one year and over. In addition, 75 Ministry of Defence civilian houses and flats in the United Kingdom had been vacant for under six months and 93 for six months and over. The regional breakdown is as follows:

Many of these properties were either undergoing or awaiting major maintenance work or modernisation, some were already allotted to service families who were due to move in shortly and others were being considered for disposal. A total of 1,701 of the dwellings were already in the process of being sold.
