§ Mr. AshbyTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment what the unemployment figure was in North-West Leicestershire(a) in June 1983 and (b) at the latest available date.
Mr. Jackson[holding answer 21 March 1991]: In February 1991 there were 2,024 unemployed claimants in the North-West Leicestershire parliamentary constituency. This compares with 3,410 in June 1983. Comparisons at the level of parliamentary constituencies are affected by the changes in the coverage of the count that have occurred over the period; this particular comparison is also affected by seasonal influences.
§ Mr. AshbyTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many new jobs have been created in North-West Leicestershire since 1979.
Mr. Jackson[holding answer 21 March 1991]: Estimates of changes in employment for parliamentary constituencies are available only from the censuses of employment. The latest available figures are for September 1987; the earliest are for September 1981. Between these two dates, the number of employees in employment in the North-West Leicestershire constituency increased by 600 or 1.8 per cent. The figures exclude the self-employed and members of Her Majesty's forces.
