HC Deb 21 March 1991 vol 188 c206W
Mr. Beggs

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland who is responsible for cleaning up the former Courtaulds site near Carrickfergus.

Mr. Needham

Responsibility for cleaning up this site lies with the new owners.

Mr. Beggs

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what action will be taken to prevent pollution from solvents and drums of chemicals left at the former Courtaulds site near Carrickfergus.

Mr. Needham

Provided that the Carrickfergus borough council is satisfied that no public health nuisance exists, and the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland is satisfied that no water pollution is occurring, action on the former Courtaulds site would be the responsibility of a new owner who wished to develop the site.

The Department has established that certain inorganic wastes are present on the site and will continue to monitor the situation.
