§ Mr. John PattenThe cost of the Crime Prevention Week advertising campaign will he £3,600,000, including VAT, of which nearly £1,450,000 is for television commercials. The cost of non-advertising promotional activity for the week will be £900,000, including VAT. For reasons of commercial confidentiality, the Government do not disclose the rate of commission or the fees negotiated with individual agencies.

(2) what resources are being given to local authorities to develop crime prevention initiatives for Crime Prevention Week;
(3) what extra resources are to be given to local authorities to build on the work of Crime Prevention Week.
§ Mr. John PattenThe resources made available by the Government consist of a large volume of publicity material, including a campaign planning guide and extensive advertising, which it is expected will provide valuable support for activity organised at local level by the police, local authorities and other bodies and individuals with an interest in crime prevention.
§ Mr. SheermanTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action is being taken to prevent the publicity surrounding Crime Prevention Week from enhancing the fear of crime.
§ Mr. John PattenThe need to avoid increasing the fear of crime was taken fully into account in preparing advertising and publicity for Crime Prevention Week. One of the most important messages of the week will be that. many crimes can be prevented by members of the public taking sensible precautions against them.
