HC Deb 21 March 1991 vol 188 c207W
Mr. Straw

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, pursuant to the answer to the hon. Member for Blackburn,Official Report, 8 March, columns 299–300, he will give an estimate of the cost, in the case of each named city technology college, of visits and other attention by Her Majesty's inspectorate; and whether any part of this cost has been charged to the city technology college.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The approximate direct cost of the visits made by Her Majesty's inspectorate to the city technology colleges is as follows:

  • Kingshurst: £3,750
  • Djanogly and Macmillan: £3,750 each
  • Bradford, Emmanuel, Harris and Leigh: £1,325 each

Under section 77(2) of the 1944 Education Act I have a duty to cause inspections to be made of all educational establishments at such intervals as appear to me to be appropriate. City technology colleges are independent schools and HMI inspects such schools under section 70 of the Act. All visits by HMI to maintained and independent schools are made at no cost to the institution. As a consequence, no part of the cost of visits has been charged to the city technology colleges.
