HL Deb 20 March 1991 vol 527 cc23-4WA
Lord Harris of Greenwich

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action they propose to take following the disclosure at the inquest on Kimpua Nsimba, an asylum seeker from Nigeria, that the staff of the private security firm at Harmondsworth detention centre have not received suicide prevention training.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers):

The detention contractor's staff are required to advise the Detention Centre Medical Inspector and the Immigration Service of any detainee who appears unwell or seems intent on self-injury. Detailed guidance on suicide prevention, which takes account of HM Chief Inspector of Prisons' recent report on suicide prevention in penal establishments, will be issued to the contractor and to Immigration Service staff shortly.
