HL Deb 18 March 1991 vol 527 cc15-6WA
Lord Nugent of Guildford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What improvement in traffic movement and what reduction in accidents has been achieved at Hyde Park Corner since the installation of the traffic light system.

The Minister of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara):

The City of Westminster, as the local highway authority, is responsible for roads around Hyde Park Corner. However, I understand that, in the three-years before signals were installed in 1983 on three of the five junctions of the gyratory system, the number of personal injury accidents at the three signal controlled junctions was 107, whereas in the latest three year period (to November 1990) it was 47. For the rest of the system the comparable figures are 57 and 60 respectively.

The Metropolitan Police report that the substantial reduction in police attendance to incidents which occurred after signals were installed has continued. Traffic conditions are continuously monitored by closed circuit television and the signal timings can be adjusted from the computer control room to deal with any build-up of congestion.
