Mr. Tracey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on his plans for the operation of the assisted places scheme operating for parents of pupils in independent schools in the next academic year.

Mr. Fallon

The assisted places scheme, which has operated every year since 1981, will operate again in the academic year 1991–92 when a total of 33,450 places will be available. A statement about the annual adjustment of the parental contribution scales for the scheme will be made shortly.
