HC Deb 14 March 1991 vol 187 c657W
Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what effects have been observed as a result of the breakwater erected at the mouth of the River Dun in respect of(a) deposition or removal of sand, (b) on commercial fisheries and (c) on the freedom of movement of migratory fish.

Mr. Hanley

The answer is:

  1. (a) No effect on the deposition or removal of sand can be attributed with certainty to the breakwater.
  2. (b) There has been an increase in the commercial salmon catch in the vicinity of the breakwater since its erection.
  3. (c) Fish migrating from the River Dun should not be affected by the breakwater but those returning to the River, while not obstructed by the structure itself, may be impeded to an extent during periods when the adjacent fixed draft net is also in the fishing mode. To facilitate the passage of fish the owner of the net has made application to change the site and characteristics of the net and following a recent public inquiry the matter is awaiting decision.
