HC Deb 14 March 1991 vol 187 c652W
Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the availability to hon. Members of information about the names, dates of conviction, offences of conviction and length of sentences of convicted persons.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

In general, police records are regarded as confidential and information is not disclosed from them unless there are important considerations of public interest. Exceptions to the general rule of confidentiality are usually only made for the protection of vulnerable members of society; to ensure probity in the administration of the law; and national security.
