HC Deb 14 March 1991 vol 187 c655W
John Marshall

21. Mr.To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement upon trends in expenditure upon education in Northern Ireland since 1978–79.

Dr. Mawhinney

In 1978–79 spending on education in Northern Ireland was £332 million. In 1989–90 it was £898 million. This cash increase of £566 million over the period represents a real increase of 151½ per cent. This year I expect expenditure on education to be around £1 billion.
