HC Deb 13 March 1991 vol 187 c569W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will now set a minimum permissible delay between stunning and slaughtering of animals in abattoirs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Curry

It is not proposed to prescribe by law minimum periods between the stunning and sticking of animals. The law requires that when animals are stunned they must be instantaneously rendered insensible to pain until death occurs and that there must be no delay between stunning and sticking. Advice on stunning and sticking procedures will be included in planned codes of practice.
