Mr. Trotter

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment (1) whether he will estimate the number of new jobs created in the constituencies of Tynemouth, Langbaurgh, Darlington and Stockton, South(a) since February 1981 and (b) since June 1987;

(2) whether he will give the number of people at work in the constituencies of Tynemouth, Langbaurgh, Darlington and Stockton, South in February 1981, June 1983, June 1987 and February 1991.

The available information for the constituencies is from the censuses of employment held in 1981, 1984 and 1987 and is given in the table. The figures relate only to employees in employment; they exclude the self-employed and members of Her Majesty's forces.

My Department is also making available an additional £800,000 to the British Tourist Authority to mount a recovery campaign in overseas markets.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list for the financial years 1987–88 to 1991–92, all moneys given by central Government to tourism and the tourist industry under its different headings, including grant assistance to the tourist boards and section 4 grants.

The Government's support for other tourism-related activity in 1988–89, the last year for which figures are available, is estimated to be about £380 million (excluding expenditure by local authorities).

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what proportion of the British Tourist Authority's expenditure in the financial years 1987 to 1991–92 has been provided directly by the Government as grant in aid.
