To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the average public expenditure per student in Scottish higher education in each year since 1975.

The average public expenditure through recurrent grant and tuition fees per student in the Scottish grant-aided colleges since 1980–81 is given in the following table.

Figures for earlier years could be provided only at disproportionate cost. Information relating to the universities in Scotland has not been included since the funding of universities is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science. Information about expenditure relating to higher education courses at further education colleges is not held centrally.
