HC Deb 13 March 1991 vol 187 c553W
Mr. Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what cost benefit would accrue to the national health service from a 1 per cent. increase in the prescribing of generic pharmaceuticals by general practitioners in place of branded drugs.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

It is not possible to estimate such a saving. The saving which could be achieved would depend on which drugs GPs chose to prescribe generically and whether there was a generic equivalent of these branded products available on the market.
