HC Deb 12 March 1991 vol 187 c496W
Mr. Hill

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many female sterilisation operations are carried out in the national health service per year; and how many claims for compensation are made.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

In 1988–89, the latest year for which figures are available, an estimated 91,100 female sterilisation operations were carried out in the NHS in England. Information about the number of compensation claims is not collected centrally.
