To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what was the drugs bill in family health services in the last financial year;

(2) what was the drugs bill for the national health service per head of population (a) in 1989–90 and (b) in the current financial year.

Expenditure by the family health services for drugs in England in 1989–90 was £1,942 million. The 1989–90 cost per head of population of all NHS drugs (including drugs in the hospital and community health services) was £49.40. A comparable figure is not yet available for the current financial year.
