§ Mr. WigleyTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment what recourse is available to disabled people who consider they have been unjustifiably discriminated against in the field of employment.
Mr. JacksonWhere people feel that discrimination in employment arises from their having a disability they can discuss the matter with the Disablement Advisory Service or a disablement resettlement officer who, where appropriate, can contact the employer and seek to overcome any prejudice or misunderstanding, including providing guidance on the wide range of help available for integrating people with disabilities into the work force. If they meet the qualifying conditions they may be able to complain of unfair dismissal to an industrial tribunal. Along with other employees, in the appropriate circumstances they can also complain to an industrial tribunal about discrimination on grounds of sex, race and membership or non-membership of a trade union, for which there is no qualifying period of service.
