To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of gross domestic product the Government spend on civil scientific research; and what are the comparative figures in Japan and the United States of America.

In 1988 the United Kingdom Government spent 0.55 per cent of gross domestic product on civil scientific research. The corresponding figures for Japan and the United States of America were 0.45 and 0.39 per cent.
