HC Deb 12 March 1991 vol 187 c483W
Dr. Marek

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of workplaces for civil servants in his Department; what proportion of the total number have an on-site nursery facility; how many and what proportion of workplaces provide a holiday play scheme; how many and what proportion of workplaces provide after-school child care facilities; what charges are made for use of any facility; what the net cost has been for the provision of these facilities; and what estimate he can make of any future expenditure.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

The Home Office employs staff in some 320 workplaces throughout the country. Nursery provision is generally focused on areas which have considerable concentration of staff: it is already available in Croydon and in Bootle and will shortly be available in Westminster and north London. Holiday play schemes are also available in Croydon, Bootle and Westminster as well as at Peterborough, but there is no current provision for after school child care. The Department contributes to the cost of the existing provision and would expect to continue to so subsidise any future similar initiatives in which its local managers are prepared to invest. There is no central record of costs nor estimate of future costs.
