HC Deb 12 March 1991 vol 187 c495W
Dame Jill Knight

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the countries which have a structured breast screening programme similar to that introduced by Her Majesty's Government.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The United Kingdom was the first country in the European Community to introduce a nationwide breast screening programme.

The Netherlands, Finland and Sweden have policies and national screening programmes similar to those introduced in the United Kingdom.

Within Europe several countries have now decided to introduce screening, as have Australia, New Zealand and several provinces in Canada.
