HC Deb 11 March 1991 vol 187 c419W
23. Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the estimated current speed of traffic in London; what are his future projections; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chope

Speeds vary between areas, from around 11 mph in central London—with little variation through the working day—to 17 mph and 20 mph in the peak and off-peak in outer London. These figures indicate that average speeds on London's major roads are about 16 mph in the peak periods and 19 mph during the rest of the day. We do not produce forecasts of overall traffic speeds.
