To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the total number of pensioners in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Hanley

At 31 March 1990, the latest date for which figures are available, 215,604 people were receiving retirement pension and non-contributory retirement pension.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many pensioners in Northern Ireland are in receipt of income support.

Mr. Hanley

On 31 May 1989, the latest date for which information is readily available, the number of income support recipients aged over 65—men—and 60—women —was 55,680.
