HL Deb 11 March 1991 vol 527 c1WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will raise with the United Nations Human Rights Commission the alleged violations of human rights by the Derg in Ethiopia, and in particular the reported aerial bombardment of port facilities and food stocks at Massawa; and whether they will call on the Derg to withdraw their armed forces from Eritrea and call an armistice.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Earl of Caithness):

Along with our European Community partners, we expressed concern about human rights in Ethiopia in a statement to the Human Rights Commission on 27th February. We are not aware of any attacks on Massawa since relief supplies began to pass through the northern relief corridor in January. We support the negotiations about Eritrea under United States auspices.
