To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he has any plans to make cholesterol testing more widely available.

Mr. Dorrell

The Standing Medical Advisory Committee was asked to consider the cost-effectiveness of opportunistic cholesterol testing and reported in May last year. Because the report indicated that this is an area of divergent medical opinion, it was decided to issue the report for widespread consultation. Consultation has now been completed and a large number of responses were received. We expect to be in a position to consider the findings soon.
