HC Deb 11 March 1991 vol 187 c391W
Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether there is any evidence that the incidence of cancers has increased in recent years in the coastal areas of Northern Ireland as compared with inland areas.

Mr. Hanley

Information on the incidence of cancer is not normally collected on the basis of whether a person lives in a coastal or inland area. However, an independent committee investigating patterns of disease with a possible association with radiation which reported in 1989 found no evidence of a higher incidence of childhood leukaemia in coastal compared with inland areas.

Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he has any evidence that the incidence of cancers has increased in areas affected by the fallout from Chernobyl.

Mr. Hanley

None.
