HC Deb 07 March 1991 vol 187 c232W
Ms. Armstrong

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what advice he is giving to local education authorities and to schools in England regarding those pupils whose parents are refusing to allow them to take the standard assessment test at key stage 1.

Mr. Eggar

Parents do not have a right to withdraw their children from any part of the national curriculum, including the standard assessment tasks at key stage 1.

If children are absent from school without leave, local education authorities may need to investigate, through their established procedures, whether a breach of the parental duty to secure regular attendance is taking place.
