HC Deb 07 March 1991 vol 187 cc248-9W
Mr. Alfred Morris

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what checks are made to ensure that car dealers who advertise special discounts to people in receipt of mobility allowance grant these discounts in addition to those generally available; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Leigh

No official checks are made by the Department with regard to the advertising of special discounts to people in receipt of a mobility allowance.

If an advertisement is suspected of being misleading under part III of the Consumer Protection Act 1987, which deals with misleading price indications, it should be referred to the local trading standards department.

In addition, the Advertising Standards Authority, which regulates advertising in the United Kingdom for the print, cinema, poster and direct mail media, stipulates in its code of practice that all advertisements should be legal, decent. honest and truthful. Any complaint against an advertiser may also be brought to the attention of the ASA.
