To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what advice he has given to planning authorities concerning the conservation of badger setts during the consideration of planning applications.

Advice to planning authorities on all aspects of nature conservation is contained in DOE circular 27/87, a copy of which is in the Library.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has concerning the number of badgers and the current number of active badger setts in England; how many such setts have been destroyed during the last three years; and for what reasons.

Mr. Trippier

The Nature Conservancy Council has recently published a book entitled "The History, Distribution, Status, and Habitat Requirements of the Badger in Britain" which gives these figures for England, as well as for Scotland and Wales. A copy of this book is in the Library.
