§ Mr. Nicholas BrownTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list, for each year since 1979, for each of the G7 countries, the amount of(a) civil research and development expenditure undertaken by private firms, (b) civil research and development expenditure undertaken by governments and (c) each of the above as a percentage of gross domestic product.
§ Mr. Maples[holding answer 5 March 1991]: In 1989 civil research and development undertaken by industry in the United Kingdom was £5,730 million which represents 1.1 per cent. of GDP. Prior to 1989 information collected did not distinguish between civil and defence R and D. Comparable information for other countries is not readily available.
The available information on Government civil R and D in G7 countries (except Canada) is given in tables 6.8 and 6.9 of the 1990 edition of the "Annual Review of Government Funded Research and Development", a copy of which is in the Library of the House.
