§ Mr. Michael Forsyth[holding answer 8 February 1991]: Information in the form requested is not available. The average proportion of pupil time given to physical education in education authority secondary schools in 1983 was 6.5 per cent.; the corresponding figure for 1989 was 6.6 per cent. ranging from 7.3 per cent in SI to 4.5 per cent. in S6. Figures for the percentage of time spent separately on sport are not available but arrangements are being made for statistics to be collected in future of time spent on physical recreation as a timetabled activity within the curriculum.
