To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many individuals are currently receiving mortgage interest tax relief; how many of these are men; and how many of the total are receiving relief at the top rate of tax.

[holding answer 25 February 1991]: There are an estimated 9.4 million single people and married couples with mortgages in 1990–91, of whom about one million receive interest relief at a rate in excess of the basic rate of income tax. A breakdown of the total number of mortgagors is given in the table.
