To ask the Secretary of State for Health what has been the change in the number of general practitioners between 1979 and the latest year for which figures are available.

Between 1 October 1979 and 1 October 1990 the number of general practitioners in England (1990 figures are provisional) increased by 4,267—an increase of 20 per cent.
