HC Deb 04 March 1991 vol 187 c9W
Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he is taking to encourage the standardisation of the position and operation of controls, lights and indicators for roads and road vehicles.

Mr. Chope

The detailed requirements for and the legal significance of light signals for the control of vehicular traffic are prescribed in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1981 and comply with the provisions of the European convention and agreement on road signs and signals. Detailed legal requirements for the fitting and control of lights on vehicles, including direction indicators are covered by the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989. These regulations follow closely agreed European standards for the installation and performance of lighting and light-signalling devices on motor vehicles and trailers.
