HC Deb 04 March 1991 vol 187 c43W
Mr. Cartwright

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what steps he is taking to encourage the use of low-energy light bulbs in his Department's offices and other buildings.

Dr. Mawhinney

The use of low-energy lighting is being promoted as part of a major Government effort to increase energy efficiency, with the target of a 15 per cent. reduction in overall energy consumption in Government buildings by 1995. A recent consultative paper on energy efficiency issued by the Department of Economic Development highlighted a wide range of energy conservation measures, including low-energy lighting. Departments have been asked to identify areas where energy efficiency can be improved. Moreover, where necessary, the cost of worthwhile projects will be taken into account when financial allocations are being made.
