HC Deb 01 March 1991 vol 186 cc628-9W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Attorney-General what actions have been taken since the appointment of a Minister in his Department to consider the environmental implications of his Department's policies; and if he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General

It is in the nature of the work of the legal secretariat to the Law Officers, the Treasury Solicitor's Department, the Crown prosecution service and Serious Fraud Office that it does not have a direct impact on the environment and the principal environmental concerns will be with the administration and running of those Departments.

All the Departments will be making use of the "Environmental Action Guide" issued by the Department of the Environment, and a number of steps have already been taken to promote good environmental practice.

The legal secretariat to the Law Officers, the Serious Fraud Office and the Treasury Solicitor's Department now use recycled paper for internal communications and for correspondence and the use of such paper is being considered in the Crown prosecution service.

All new vehicles used by the Crown prosecution service under a contract hire scheme use unleaded fuel while others have been converted wherever this is technically possible. The Serious Fraud Office has obtained an undertaking from suppliers that any wooden furniture supplied is made from readily renewable sources of wood.

All the Departments are giving consideration to the use of low-energy light bulbs wherever practicable.
