HL Deb 27 June 1991 vol 530 c45WA
Lord Carmichael of Kelvingrove

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the options they have considered regarding the future of the Rosyth naval base can now be published, to allow proper consultation with interested parties.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (The Earl of Arran)

No. We are committed to full and open consultation with the trade unions once we have proposals to make.

Lord Carmichael of Kelvingrove

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have fully assessed the implications for the local economy of the closure of the Rosyth naval base, and if discussions have taken place with the local authorities on this.

The Earl of Arran

All relevant factors are being considered. We have received copies of reports undertaken by St. Andrews University on behalf of Fife Regional Council.

Lord Carmichael of Kelvingrove

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What consultations have taken place with NATO on the future of the Rosyth naval base.

The Earl of Arran

None. The provision of logistic support is a national responsibility. However, the NATO authorities are fully aware that we aim to achieve substantial savings in all areas of defence support.
