To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the current level of inflation.

Mr. Maples

The 12-month all-items RPI inflation rate was 5.8 per cent. in May, the lowest rate since August 1988. RPI inflation is now more than 5 percentage points below its peak last autumn and has fallen for seven successive months. We are on track for the Budget forecast of 4 per cent. in the fourth quarter of this year.
