HL Deb 25 June 1991 vol 530 c39WA
Lord Monkswell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many escalators on the London Underground are currently out of operation, and what were the comparable figures a year ago and five years ago.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

In the first quarter of 1991, the latest period for which figures are available, an average of 41 (15 per cent.) of a total of 275 escalators on the London Underground were out of passenger service, thus 85 per cent. were available to passengers. This compares favourably with the target we have set London Underground, of 86 per cent. availability by April 1992. In the first quarter of 1990, an average of 52 escalators (19 per cent.) were out of service. There are no comparable figures for five years ago. The first year in which data were collected was 1988/89. During that year an average of 61 escalators (22 per cent.) were out of service.
