HL Deb 25 June 1991 vol 530 cc37-8WA
Lord Mason of Barnsley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action they propose to take following reports from local authority Trading Standards Officers that beer drinkers are being served short pints; whether they intend to introduce legislation to ensure that all half-pint and pint measures are served in lined glasses only.

lord Reay: Serving short measure is an offence under the Weights and Measures Act 1985, which is the responsibility of local weights and measures authorities to enforce. Some trading standards officers have suggested that there should be a change in the law which at present allows froth as well as liquid beer to be counted as part of the measure in some circumstances. However, there is little evidence that individual consumers are dissatisfied with how beer is served and the Government see no need for further legislation on this matter.
