The regulatory260W authorities therefore place greater reliance on the application by industry of appropriate safeguards in plant design and process operation to minimise fugitive emissions and on early rectification of any abnormal situations.
The National Rivers Authority regularly monitors for a wide range of substances including those consented for discharge to surface waters. Results are entered on public registers held by each NRA region. Some monitoring of air quality is undertaken by local authority environmental health departments.
