§ Mr. WilsonTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if he has received any formal proposals for the creation of a national stadium, other than at Hampden Park; and if he will make a statement;
(2) if he will make a statement on proposed levels of Government support for the refurbishment of Hampden Park.
§ Mr. LangThe Government have consistently made it clear that they are ready to consider funding support at the margin for a national football stadium. That remains our position. The National Stadium Committee is, however, looking for £15.5 million from central Government towards a £34.5 million scheme for the refurbishment of Hampden Park costed at January 1991 prices. A large proportion of the remaining funding is also expected to come from the public sector. This proportion of support goes beyond what the Government would be prepared to contribute and the committee has been informed of this. Although other proposals for a national stadium have 283W been made for several sites throughout the central belt of Scotland, the only specific request for Government funding has been that of the National Stadium Committee. It is for the football authorities to decide where such a stadium should be located.
